日本写真史の金字塔として名高い川田喜久治の写真集『地図』。著名なグラフィックデザイナー杉浦康平の装丁によるこの写真集は、1965年の刊行以来、2005年と2014年に復刻版が出版されている。2001年秋には、ニューヨーク公共図書館が、極めて貴重な『地図』の構想模型(マケット)を収蔵している。マケットは川田の手製であり、写真集とほぼ同じ作品が収録されているが、イメージのトリミングや階調、向きなどにバリエーションがある。より大きな違いは、二分冊の装丁であり、サイズも出版本の２倍近くある。写真のページには、ごく薄い、複写用の印画紙が使われ、写真同士が貼り合わされている。出版本にある観音開きのページを開いていく形式とは異なり、どれも断ち切りの激しいイメージが連続して現れる。本書は、この２冊本のマケットの精緻な復元であり、ジョシュア・チュアン（ニューヨーク公共図書館ウォラック記念アート部門アソシエート・ディレクター）とヒントン実結枝（アート・リサーチャー）による研究論文に加え、初版本の写真集『地図』の制作をめぐる川田自身の詳細なインタビューを収録している。
